H-A-Double L-O-W-Double E-N Spells Halloween!

Halloween is one of our homeschool co-op's most fun holidays to celebrate, filled with creativity, laughter, and a sprinkle of spookiness! Our kids (and tutors) go all out with their costumes and games and treats make the day so much fun. Each year brings fresh ideas that keep the excitement alive. Celebrating holidays together allows our children to make unforgettable memories with friends. These special celebrations foster a sense of community and belonging, teaching kids the importance of traditions and the joy of gathering together. Each spooky treat and festive activity builds lasting connections that they will carry with them for years to come. If you’re looking for fresh Halloween party ideas, check these out and make this Halloween a celebration to remember!

Are you a Wizard???

This fun activity combines mystery and science and it will definitely bring excitement and laughter to your party. This has been a favorite of many of my students and it’s one they remember for a long time. I found this free activity here. You’ll print out really spooky labels that say big words like Dihydrogen Monoxide (water) and Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda.) Students will get to choose their pigmenting agent (color) and which combinations of ingredients they are going to use in their potion. They will take turns mixing their potions and saying some magic words and if their potion starts to bubble and fizz….they are really a wizard!!! Just keep in mind that depending on the ages you do this activity with, some of the kids will actually get pretty upset if their potion doesn’t work. So I usually let them go again, but choose a different combination of ingredients. One year I found cute little black cauldrons at the Dollar Store to use for one of the ingredients, otherwise plastic cups work just fine.

A boy carefully observing a yellow liquid in a clear plastic cup while using a white stirring stick, with a bowl of ice on the table nearby in a classroom setting.
A young girl in a gray hoodie with pink lettering is smiling and raising her fists in celebration, standing behind a table with a homemade volcano erupting with blue foam.

Halloween art should be a part of any good Halloween party. It’s nice to have an activity to calm everyone down after the craziness of games and maybe a little bit of sugar?? Here are some fun ones that use supplies you probably already have.

A colorful painting of four orange pumpkins with black outlines, set against a blue sky with white stars and a white moon, on a green background.
A colorful drawing of an anchor with pink and purple striped socks hanging from a string, a black spider on the right, and a dark gray cloud overhead, with a blue background.
A child's drawing of a person wearing a red coat, pink and yellow striped pants, and black boots with white sparkles. A small black heart on a chain is hanging from the coat's collar.
Juice boxes with googly eyes arranged on a red platter to look like faces.
A paper craft of a smiling pumpkin with big eyes, a smiling mouth with teeth, and a green stem on a black background with green grass at the bottom.

This is a really cool activity from Mystery Science and it’s fun to do around Halloween time because it deals with skeletons. The kids learn all about the many bones in their hands and then they end up making a picture that looks like an x-ray of their hand. They are pretty amazed at how they turn out. I highly recommend Mystery Science if you are not familiar with it.

A young girl with long, wavy hair is sitting at a desk, drawing a hand-print on purple paper with a black marker. There is a paint palette with colorful paint and a white marker on the desk.
A red sheet with a handprint made from cut-out sections, resembling a skeleton or skeletal hand, attached to a window.

Every good party needs food and drinks! The kids loved these eyeball cupcakes and the bloody punch with a hand in it was a hit. Just put water in a glove and freeze it!

A glass of red fruit punch with ice cubes, a plastic straw, and a handful of stacked plastic cups in the background on an orange table.
Cupcake with white frosting, red drizzle, and a large edible eyeball decoration on top, on a wooden table.

Camp Share-a-Story is perfect to do around Halloween time because you can have the kids write spooky ghost stories and then share them in the dark by using a flashlight. Even your reluctant writers will be motivated to participate in this writing activity!

Happy Halloween! I hope you and your kids enjoy some of these ideas at your next party!
